Varṣaphala: your annual chart
Varṣaphala is the annual Tājika horoscope, cast when the Sun returns to its birth degree. Mạghā calculates the annual chart, Muntha, year lord, yogas, 37 Sahams and twelve monthly charts from your saved birth details.
Born at 06:30 IST on 14 October 1994 with Libra rising, Nila begins the year from her 32nd birthday at 11:19:28 IST on 14 October 2026, 11,688.20 days later, when the sidereal Sun returns to the same degree. The rising sign at that moment is Sagittarius 7°38′.

Each solar return comes about six hours later on the clock
A sidereal solar return occurs after about 365 days, 6 hours and 9 minutes, when the Sun regains its birth longitude. Nila's age-32 return is 14 October 2026 at 11:19:28 IST, at Virgo 26°40′23″. Mạghā finds it with Swiss Ephemeris and your zodiac/ayanāṁśa settings, defaulting to sidereal Lahiri. The chosen return place changes the ascendant and houses, not the return instant.

The Muntha moves one sign a year from the birth Lagna
The Muntha (munthahā) ties the annual chart to the birth chart. In the rule later authors quote from Samarasiṃha, it moves one sign for every completed year, counted from the birth Lagna, so it returns to the Lagna's own sign every twelve years. Nīlakaṇṭha also records the view that the birth Lagna's degree travels with it, and Mạghā keeps that degree.
At 32, Nila's Muntha stands at 0°46′ Gemini, the ninth sign from her Libra Lagna. In the annual chart it falls in the 7th house, counted from the Sagittarius Varṣa Lagna. Mạghā marks it on the chart as Mu, and Year at a glance names its house and sign.
Its lord, Mercury, becomes one of the five candidates for the year lord. The Muntha and year lord page follows both in detail.
Mercury, which holds two offices, and Venus aspect the Sagittarius Varṣa Lagna by sextile, Saturn by square and Jupiter not at all. Mạghā names Saturn, the only office-holder with an inimical aspect.
| Office | Candidate | Aspect |
|---|---|---|
| Sun-sign lord | Mercury · Libra | sextile · friendly |
| Birth Lagna lord | Venus · Libra, retrograde | sextile · friendly |
| Varṣa Lagna lord | Jupiter · Cancer | no aspect |
| Muntha lord | Mercury · Libra | sextile · friendly |
| Day tri-rāśi lord | Saturn · Pisces, retrograde | square · inimical |
Five office-holders compete to become the year lord
Five offices nominate the year lord: day Sun/night Moon sign lord, birth Lagna lord, return Lagna lord, Muntha lord and tri-rāśi lord. Classical accounts weigh strength and the aspect to the return Lagna; Raman uses Pañcavargīya Bala.
Mạghā instead prefers a sole friendly aspect, then a sole inimical aspect, otherwise a dignity/angularity/speed/degree score. It omits aspect strength and five-fold strength, and currently counts duplicate office-holders twice. It names Saturn in Nila’s chart; other methods may disagree.

Tājika counts aspects by sign and builds its yogas on them
Tājika treats 3rd/11th and 5th/9th sign relationships as friendly; conjunction, opposition and 4th/10th relationships are inimical. Planetary orbs range from 7° for Mercury and Venus to 15° for the Sun. Yogas distinguish applying Itthaśāla from separating Īsarāpha within those orbs. Mạghā tests ten classical yogas and provides a full aspect matrix plus 37 Sahams in Reference. Nila's annual Sun, for example, applies to Jupiter within one degree.

The Tajik tab holds the year and each of its months
Māsa Praveśa charts begin when the Sun reaches its birth degree in successive signs; the first coincides with the annual return. The Tajik tab separates Annual, Māsa, Reference and Degrees. Annual includes the Muntha, yogas, relationships and the five year-lord candidates with their aspects and scores. Choose the annual year and return place there, or add an annual chart for an age up to 160 beside the natal chart.
Questions about the Tājika annual chart
Is Varṣaphala cast for the birth place or where I live now?
Teachers differ. Many cast the annual chart for the birth place; others use the place where the native is at the moment of the return. The moment is the same everywhere, so only the Varṣa Lagna and the houses change.
Mạghā uses the birth place unless you choose Other place in the Return place dialog, and your birth chart is left untouched.
Why does my annual chart not start at my birth time?
The year begins when the Sun reaches its exact birth longitude, and a sidereal year lasts about 365 days 6 hours 9 minutes. Each return therefore arrives roughly six hours later on the clock than the year before, and it can fall on the day before or after the birthday. Nila was born at 06:30; her return at age 32 came at 11:19.
How is Varṣaphala different from a Western solar return?
Both are cast when the Sun returns to its birth position, but Varṣaphala measures that position in the sidereal zodiac. The two moments drift apart by about 20 minutes for each year of age: for the year from Nila's 32nd birthday a tropical return comes about 11 hours earlier, with Cancer rising instead of Sagittarius. Tājika then reads its chart with the Muntha, the year lord, its own aspects and the Sahams.
Which years can Mạghā calculate?
The Annual year list starts at your birth year and runs up to 160 years after birth, within 100 years of the current year. For each year Mạghā finds the Sun's return in that calendar year, then works out the Varṣa Lagna, Muntha, year lord, yogas and Sahams, and any of the twelve monthly charts you pick. The list opens on the current year, then on the last year you chose for that chart.
