What is the D9 chart?

Navāṁśa divides each sign into nine portions. D9 is central to traditional studies of partnership and planetary dignity. It derives from the same birth details as D1 and neither replaces it nor begins operating only after marriage.

Nine portions of 3°20′.

Aries, 11 degrees. Conventional Navāṁśa: movable signs start from themselves; fixed signs start from their ninth. The 30-degree sign is divided into 9 equal portions. The highlighted original longitude is mapped using the recorded sign sequence. In order, the 9 portions map to Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius. Portion 4 contains the example and maps to Cancer.

Calculation examples

How is the D9 chart calculated?

Each 30° sign contains nine portions of 3°20′. For movable signs, counting begins from the same sign; for fixed signs, from the ninth; for dual signs, from the fifth. Count forward and include the starting sign.

Aries is movable, so its portions start from Aries. Taurus is fixed, so its portions start from Capricorn. At 11°, both positions occupy the fourth portion: 11° Aries maps to Cancer in D9, while 11° Taurus maps to Aries.

Mạghā’s calculation expresses the same mapping by multiplying the full zodiac longitude by nine and wrapping it into the zodiac.

Partnership and planetary dignity

The classical account associates Navāṁśa with the spouse. Astrologers also compare a planet’s D1 and D9 signs when considering its dignity and the repetition of a placement across charts.

A planet occupying the same sign in D1 and D9 is described as vargottama. This is a specific relationship between the two charts, not a statement that every part of a person’s life will be easy.

A relationship reading likewise depends on more than one planet or one sign.

Reading D9 alongside D1

Begin with D1 and the question being studied. For partnership, examine the relevant houses and planets there before bringing in the D9 ascendant, its ruler and planetary relationships.

Compare sign placements directly, and keep birth-time accuracy in view. The D9 ascendant can change even when a small time adjustment leaves the D1 ascendant in the same sign.

These are traditional interpretations, not guarantees about marriage, compatibility or the choices another person will make.
