Trikoṇa and Ekādhipatya Śodhana

Śodhana reduces Aṣṭakavarga bindus before Piṇḍa calculation. Trikoṇa Śodhana compares each trine's three signs; Ekādhipatya Śodhana then compares signs sharing a ruler. Mạghā applies both steps and shows the reduced values used in Śodhya Piṇḍa.

Trikoṇa Śodhana leaves 13 of the 52 bindus in Venus's table in Nila Raman's chart.Reduce each trine by its smallest count

In each trine the smallest count is taken from all three signs: Aries, Leo and Sagittarius go from 3, 6, 6 to 0, 3, 3; Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn from 6, 3, 3 to 3, 0, 0; Gemini, Libra and Aquarius from 6, 4, 5 to 2, 0, 1; Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces from 3, 4, 3 to 0, 1, 0.

Trikoṇa Śodhana takes the smallest count from all three signs

The twelve signs fall into four trines: Aries, Leo and Sagittarius; Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn; Gemini, Libra and Aquarius; Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. Parāśara compares the three counts of each trine in a planet's table. If any of the three signs has no bindu, the trine is left alone. If all three counts are equal, all three are cleared to zero. Otherwise the smallest count is subtracted from each sign.

Nila's Venus has 3, 6 and 6 bindus in Aries, Leo and Sagittarius, so 3 comes off each and they keep 0, 3 and 3. Over the four trines her Venus table falls from 52 bindus to 13. In her Sun's table, Gemini, Libra and Aquarius hold 4 each, so all three are cleared.

Reducing signs with one ruler

Ekādhipatya Śodhana compares five pairs: Aries–Scorpio, Taurus–Libra, Gemini–Virgo, Sagittarius–Pisces and Capricorn–Aquarius. Cancer and Leo remain unchanged. Occupied signs retain their bindus; reductions affect empty signs.

  • A zero in either sign, or planets in both: no change.
  • Both empty and equal: both are cleared.
  • Both empty and unequal: the larger drops to the smaller.
  • One occupied, with an equal or larger count: the empty sign is cleared.
  • One occupied, with the smaller count: the empty sign is cut by that count, or to it.

Translations differ on an empty sign exceeding its occupied partner. Kapoor and Sharma read subtraction; Phaladīpikā lowers it to the occupied count.

Mạghā’s reduction method

The Aṣṭakavarga tab ends with Piṇḍa totals from reduced tables. Mạghā applies Trikoṇa rules to seven planets. Rāhu and Ketu do not count as occupants; an empty sign exceeding its occupied partner is lowered to that count.

Note: reduced tables are not displayed. Ekādhipatya uses each Mars-to-Saturn planet’s own sign pair, keeps tied empty counts and treats the Ascendant’s sign as occupied. These conventions can produce different totals from other books or programs.

Every co-owned pair in Venus's reduced table holds a zero, so Ekādhipatya Śodhana leaves its 13 bindus unchanged.Co-owned signs after Trikoṇa Śodhana

After Trikoṇa, Venus's pairs read Aries 0 and Scorpio 1, Taurus 3 and Libra 0, Gemini 2 and Virgo 0, Sagittarius 3 and Pisces 0, Capricorn 0 and Aquarius 1. A zero in either sign means no reduction, so the 13 bindus pass to the Piṇḍa: 122 plus 5, a Śodhya Piṇḍa of 127.

Ekādhipatya comparison
RulerRemaining countsOccupancy
MarsAries 0 · Scorpio 1Neither sign occupied
VenusTaurus 3 · Libra 0Libra occupied
MercuryGemini 2 · Virgo 0Virgo occupied
JupiterSagittarius 3 · Pisces 0Neither sign occupied
SaturnCapricorn 0 · Aquarius 1Both signs occupied
Every pair contains a zero, so no further reduction applies. Cancer 0 and Leo 3 have one ruler each and are not compared. The 13 bindus give 122 + 5 = 127 Śodhya Piṇḍa.

Nila's Venus keeps all 13 bindus through Ekādhipatya

After Trikoṇa Śodhana, every pair in Venus's table holds a zero: Aries 0 and Scorpio 1, Taurus 3 and Libra 0, Gemini 2 and Virgo 0, Sagittarius 3 and Pisces 0, Capricorn 0 and Aquarius 1. Under every reading of Ekādhipatya a zero stops the step, so the table keeps its 13 bindus, including the 3 in Leo, which has no partner.

Those 13 bindus become Venus's Piṇḍa: 122 from the sign multipliers plus 5 from Aquarius, the sign Saturn occupies, for a Śodhya Piṇḍa of 127. The diagrams explain the saved sample; they are not reduced-table screens from the app.

Questions about Trikoṇa and Ekādhipatya Śodhana

Why are Cancer and Leo never reduced in Ekādhipatya Śodhana?

Their rulers own nothing else. The Moon rules only Cancer and the Sun only Leo, so neither sign has a partner to compare with, and Parāśara keeps their counts as Trikoṇa Śodhana left them. Both signs still take part in the Trikoṇa step with their trines.

Do Rāhu and Ketu count in the reductions?

No. The Aṣṭakavarga has tables only for the seven planets and the ascendant, and G. C. Sharma's translation notes that Rāhu and Ketu are “out of reckoning”. A sign holding only a node counts as empty: Nila's Ketu sits alone in Aries, so Aries is treated as empty. Mạghā ignores the nodes here too.

Does Śodhana change the Sarvāṣṭakavarga?

No. The reductions work on each planet's own table to prepare its Piṇḍa. The Sarvāṣṭakavarga remains the sum of the unreduced tables, and Mạghā's Sarvāṣṭakavarga row shows those sums, such as 39 bindus for Leo in Nila's chart. A longevity method in C. S. Patel's translation reduces a combined table separately, a different calculation.

Why do books and programs give different reduced figures?

They read the rules differently. Mantreśvara clears a trine's third sign when the other two are empty, and the Praśna Mārga clears the rest of a trine when even one sign is empty. C. S. Patel's text subtracts the smaller count from both empty signs of a pair, where Sharma's translation lowers the larger to it. Check which reading a program follows before comparing its numbers.
