Śodhya Piṇḍa: Rāśi and Graha totals
Śodhya Piṇḍa weights reduced Aṣṭakavarga bindus by sign and by occupying planet. Rāśi Piṇḍa and Graha Piṇḍa add to the final total. Mạghā calculates all three values for the seven classical planets after both Śodhana reductions.
Every sign and every planet carries a fixed multiplier
Parāśara multiplies Taurus and Leo by 10, Gemini and Scorpio by 8, Aries and Libra by 7, and Capricorn and Virgo by 5; Cancer, Sagittarius, Aquarius and Pisces take their own numbers, 4, 9, 11 and 12. Among the planets, Jupiter's factor is 10, Mars's 8 and Venus's 7, while the Sun, Moon, Mercury and Saturn take 5. When two planets share a sign, its bindus are multiplied once for each.
Nila's reduced Venus table keeps 3 bindus in Taurus, 2 in Gemini, 3 in Leo, 1 in Scorpio, 3 in Sagittarius and 1 in Aquarius. Multiplied, they give 30, 16, 30, 8, 27 and 11, a Rāśi Piṇḍa of 122. Of the signs holding planets, only Aquarius, where Saturn stands, keeps a bindu, so the Graha Piṇḍa is 5.

Piṇḍa in traditional timing
Parāśara multiplies Śodhya Piṇḍa by the relevant sign’s bindus and divides by 27 to identify a transit nakṣatra, or by 12 for a sign. These are traditional timing methods, not established predictions. Mạghā supplies totals; the timing arithmetic is manual.
Parāśara uses the total for timing. Multiply a planet's Śodhya Piṇḍa by the bindus in the sign that matters in its table and divide by 27: the remainder, counted from Aśvinī, names a nakṣatra, and Saturn's transit over it, or over the 10th and 19th nakṣatras from it, brings trouble to that sign's matters. He reads the father from the 9th sign from the Sun, the mother from the 4th from the Moon, children from the 5th from Jupiter, marriage from the 7th from Venus and longevity from the 8th from Saturn, each in that planet's table. Dividing by 12 instead gives a sign.
Some longevity methods use the same totals. In the Sanskrit text C. S. Patel translates, each Śodhya Piṇḍa times 7, divided by 27, gives the years a planet contributes, before further reductions.

Reading the three Piṇḍas
The final Aṣṭakavarga table lists Rāśi, Graha and Śodhya Piṇḍa for Sun through Saturn. Switching chart layouts or sign/house views leaves these birth-chart totals unchanged. Transit and longevity calculations remain manual.
Note: Mạghā uses Virgo’s multiplier of 6 from Kapoor’s table; Sharma and Patel print 5. It applies its own Ekādhipatya comparisons and omits an Ascendant Piṇḍa. Check both reduction and multiplier conventions before comparing programs.
Graha Piṇḍa rewards bindus in the signs where planets sit
Because the Graha Piṇḍa counts only occupied signs, it rewards a table that keeps bindus where the planets are. Nila's Mercury table keeps 3 bindus in Libra, which holds Mercury, Jupiter and Venus, so those 3 are multiplied by 5, 10 and 7 for 66. Capricorn's 1 bindu under the Moon and Aquarius's 3 under Saturn add 5 and 15, for 86, the largest in her chart. Venus's table keeps a bindu in only one occupied sign and scores 5.
The seven displayed Graha Piṇḍa figures run from 5 for Venus to 86 for Mercury. Read this occupied-sign total alongside the Rāśi Piṇḍa rather than as a separate prediction.
What people ask about Śodhya Piṇḍa
What does Śodhya Piṇḍa mean?
Piṇḍa means a mass or total, and śodhya refers to the reductions done first, so the name means the total of a planet's reduced Aṣṭakavarga. Books also call it Śuddha Piṇḍa or Yoga Piṇḍa. Mantreśvara uses the name differently, for the plain count of bindus left after the reductions, so check which a book means.
Can I calculate Śodhya Piṇḍa for my own chart?
Yes. Mạghā calculates Rāśi, Graha and Śodhya Piṇḍa for the seven planets of every chart you save, free for life like every astrology feature: open the chart's Aṣṭakavarga tab and scroll to the end. To check a figure by hand, use the multipliers above with Parāśara's reduction rules, checking the reduction and multiplier conventions in the note.
How is Śodhya Piṇḍa used to judge longevity?
In two ways. Parāśara multiplies the total of Saturn's table by the bindus in the 8th sign from Saturn and divides by 27; Saturn's transit over the resulting nakṣatra or its trines marks a period of danger. The text C. S. Patel translates also turns each planet's total into years, times 7 and divided by 27, then reduces them for conjunctions, debilitation, combustion and enemy signs. Neither is a forecast on its own.
Why do Śodhya Piṇḍa calculators give different totals?
They follow different readings. The Sanskrit verse sets Virgo's multiplier at 5 with Capricorn, but G. S. Kapoor's printed table gives 6, which Mạghā and some other programs use. Translators and programs also use different Ekādhipatya comparisons. Check the reduction method, Virgo factor and whether a figure is Rāśi, Graha or their combined Śodhya Piṇḍa before comparing totals.
