What is the D60 chart?

Ṣaṣṭyāṁśa divides each sign into sixty portions and has a broad traditional role in horoscope study. D60 requires particular care with birth-time precision. A finer chart does not, by itself, make an interpretation more certain.

Sixty portions of 30′.

Mạghā’s calculated example

How is the D60 chart calculated?

Each portion spans 30′, or half a degree. Mạghā’s shared calculation counts forward from the original sign, moving one sign for each successive portion and repeating after twelve.

A position at 11°06′ lies in the twenty-third portion. Starting from Aries gives Aquarius in D60; starting from Taurus gives Pisces.

Published D60 methods are not uniform. These examples use the original-sign starting rule described by P. V. R. Narasimha Rao and implemented in Mạghā’s shared calculation. The names assigned to individual Ṣaṣṭyāṁśas are a separate subject from this sign-mapping diagram.

The classical description gives D60 a broad interpretive role. It is often brought into a reading to compare indications already being considered in D1 and other relevant divisions.

The important question is whether the birth details support that level of precision. A smaller portion can place an ascendant near a dividing degree even when the D1 chart appears unchanged.

Reading D60 alongside D1

Begin with the birth-time record and D1. Then compare the relevant planets, the D60 ascendant and its ruler, keeping the chosen calculation method consistent.

There is no single number of seconds after which every D60 ascendant or planet must change sign. The result depends on the point being calculated, its position and its motion at that time.

These are traditional interpretations, not a way to verify past lives or recover an unknown birth time from one placement.
