What is the D108 chart?
D108, or Aṣṭottarāṁśa, uses 108 portions per sign. Mạghā applies Navāṁśa first, then Dvādaśāṁśa, retaining each intermediate sign and degree. Reversing those steps can change the result despite the same total factor.
D9, then D12.
D108 method 1: conventional D9 followed by forward original-sign D12. Start with 11 degrees Aries. Apply D9 to obtain 9 degrees Cancer. Retain both that sign and its full within-sign degree. Apply D12 to obtain 18 degrees Libra in D108. The original-sign scale shows angular portions of 16′40″; the final sign comes from the two ordered steps, not cyclic multiplication.

How is the D108 chart calculated?
Each original portion spans 16′40″. First calculate D9, retaining both its sign and its degree within that sign. Then divide that D9 sign into twelve portions of 2°30′ and count forward from the D9 sign.
At 11° Aries, the first step gives 9° Cancer. That lies in the fourth D12 portion counted from Cancer, giving Libra in D108. At 11° Taurus, the first step gives 9° Aries; the second step gives Cancer.
Both the intermediate sign and intermediate degree are needed. Simply multiplying the original longitude by 108 would describe a different mapping.

Why the order of the two steps matters
Published accounts distinguish D9 followed by D12 from D12 followed by D9. Although both divide by the same total factor, their sign-assignment rules can give different results.
For 11° Aries, reversing the order gives Cancer rather than the Libra produced by the method on this page. The difference is a calculation choice, not evidence that the birth details changed.
Record the method when comparing D108 with D9, D12 or another program’s output.

Reading D108 alongside D1
Keep D1 as the starting point and follow the intermediate placements before interpreting D108. Use one clearly identified method throughout a comparison.
The small portions require particular care with the birth time and positions near dividing degrees. A high divisional factor does not by itself provide a separate life theme or establish greater predictive accuracy.
Any traditional interpretation needs its own stated basis beyond the arithmetic shown here.
