Sarvāṣṭakavarga
Sarvāṣṭakavarga adds the seven classical planets' Aṣṭakavarga tables sign by sign, totalling 337 bindus in every chart. The Ascendant contributes within those tables but its own table is excluded from this sum. Mạghā displays the combined SAV row.
Bars give the SAV for each sign from Aries to Pisces: 23, 27, 29, 34, 39, 23, 27, 25, 27, 21, 28 and 34. Cancer, Leo and Pisces pass Parāśara's line of 30, and Aries, Virgo and Capricorn fall below 25.
Parāśara favours a sign with more than 30 bindus
Parāśara calls a sign with more than 30 bindus favourable, one with 25 to 30 middling and one with fewer than 25 weak. Mantreśvara draws a single line at 28: planets transiting a sign above it do well, and below it they bring trouble in proportion.
Nila's chart peaks at 39 in Leo and 34 in both Cancer and Pisces. It dips to 23 in Aries and Virgo and 21 in Capricorn. The other six signs fall between 25 and 29: Scorpio 25, Taurus, Libra and Sagittarius 27, Aquarius 28 and Gemini 29. By Mantreśvara's line, Gemini, Cancer, Leo and Pisces pass, and Aquarius sits exactly on it.

Parāśara wants the 11th house fuller than the 10th and 12th
Counted as houses from the ascendant, the same totals speak about areas of life. Parāśara applies his bands to each house, and R. Santhanam's notes reverse them for the 6th, 8th and 12th houses, where fewer than 25 is better. Parāśara also names three conditions for wealth and comfort: more bindus in the 11th house than in the 10th, fewer in the 12th than in the 11th, and the most of all in the ascendant.
He uses the totals for timing too: auspicious work such as a wedding should use signs with high totals and avoid any sign below 25. R. Santhanam's example is the Moon passing the sign with the most bindus.

SAV in Mạghā
SAV is the last Aṣṭakavarga table row and the first small chart. By Rāśi orders signs from Aries; By House starts at the Ascendant. Choose North or South Indian charts. The chart’s Copy menu can include an SAV line, with or without birth details.
Note: By House always counts whole signs. It does not redistribute bindus by bhāva, as C. S. Patel and C. A. Subramania Aiyar prefer.
House by house from Libra the totals run 27, 25, 27, 21, 28, 34, 23, 27, 29, 34, 39 and 23. Two of Parāśara's three wealth conditions hold; the third, the most bindus in the ascendant, does not.
Nila's 11th house holds 39 bindus, the most in her chart
Read By House, Nila's houses run from Libra: 27, 25, 27, 21, 28, 34, 23, 27, 29, 34, 39 and 23 from the 1st to the 12th.
Two of Parāśara's three wealth conditions hold. The 11th house, Leo, has 39, more than the 10th, Cancer, with 34, and the 12th, Virgo, has only 23. The third fails: her ascendant has 27, well short of the most. Her lowest total, 21, falls in the 4th house, Capricorn, and her 6th house, Pisces, holds 34, one of the three totals above Parāśara's line of 30.
Questions about Sarvāṣṭakavarga points
What is a good Sarvāṣṭakavarga score?
There is no single target. Parāśara calls more than 30 bindus in a sign or house favourable, 25 to 30 middling and fewer than 25 weak. Mantreśvara's line is 28, close to the average of 337 spread over 12 signs. A total is read together with the planets placed in that sign.
Why does Sarvāṣṭakavarga always add up to 337?
Because each planet's own table has a fixed total: the Sun 48, the Moon 49, Mars 39, Mercury 54, Jupiter 56, Venus 52 and Saturn 39. From chart to chart the bindus move between signs but never change in number. The ascendant's own table of 49 is not included, though R. Santhanam's worked example of Parāśara's rule adds it, which gives 386.
Is it good to have more points in the 6th house?
Not by R. Santhanam's reading of Parāśara, which reverses the bands for the 6th, 8th and 12th houses: fewer than 25 bindus there is favourable. Parāśara's wealth rule points the same way for the 12th, which should hold fewer bindus than the 11th. Nila's 6th house, Pisces, holds 34.
Why does my SAV differ from another program's?
Two reasons are common. Varāhamihira and Mantreśvara place a few bindus in the Moon's and Venus's tables differently from Parāśara, whom Mạghā follows; with Varāhamihira's lists, Nila's Libra would read 26 and Pisces 35. Some authors, C. S. Patel and C. A. Subramania Aiyar among them, also count bindus by bhāva from the house cusps instead of by whole sign.
