What is the D144 chart?

D144, or Dvādaśa-Dvādaśāṁśa, uses 144 portions per sign. Mạghā applies the D12 mapping twice, using the first result's sign and degree in the second step. Both stages derive from the same birth positions.

D12, then D12.

11° Aries maps to Sagittarius in D144

D144 method 1: original-sign D12 followed by original-sign D12. Start with 11 degrees Aries. Apply D12 to obtain 12 degrees Leo. Retain both that sign and its full within-sign degree. Apply D12 to obtain 24 degrees Sagittarius in D144. The original-sign scale shows angular portions of 12′30″; the final sign comes from the two ordered steps, not cyclic multiplication.

How is the D144 chart calculated?

Each original portion spans 12′30″. First find the D12 sign and its degree. Then divide that resulting sign into twelve more portions of 2°30′, again counting from the sign being divided.

At 11° Aries, the first D12 step gives 12° Leo. Twelve degrees lies in the fifth portion of Leo, so the second step gives Sagittarius in D144. At 11° Taurus, the first step gives 12° Virgo and the second gives Capricorn.

Retaining the intermediate degree is essential. The two-stage assignment is not interchangeable with a simple cyclic multiplication by 144.

Comparing D144 with D12

The first stage is the same D12 calculation used elsewhere in Mạghā. The second stage works on that result, so two nearby positions in D1 can separate again within D144 even when they share a D12 sign.

This explains the relationship between the charts without automatically extending D12’s traditional parental theme into every D144 interpretation. A proposed meaning still needs an identified tradition or method.

Reading D144 alongside D1

Start with D1 and follow the D12 intermediate step before comparing the final D144 placement. Keep the method and birth details fixed between charts.

The narrower portions increase the need for a reliable birth time, especially for the ascendant. Do not treat a sharply drawn chart as a measure of how accurately the original time was recorded.

Any interpretation is separate from the verified calculation and should remain proportionate to the information available.
