Ṣoḍaśāṁśa, or Kalāṁśa, divides each sign into sixteen portions. It traditionally concerns conveyances and their benefits or difficulties. D16 uses the birth positions; it does not establish the fate of a particular vehicle or journey.

Each portion spans 1°52′30″. Counting starts from Aries for movable signs, Leo for fixed signs and Sagittarius for dual signs. Continue forward through the zodiac from that starting sign.
Aries is movable and Taurus is fixed. At 11°, the position falls in the sixth portion: 11° Aries maps to Virgo in D16, while 11° Taurus maps to Capricorn.
