KP ruling planets

KP ruling planets are the weekday lord and the sign and star lords of the Ascendant and Moon at judgment. Mạghā calculates them for a selected date, time and place, using no AI.

Jyeṣṭhā rising in Scorpio gives Mercury and Mars, the Moon in Uttara Phalgunī in Virgo gives the Sun and Mercury, and Saturday gives Saturn. Mạghā accepts Mercury, Mars, the Sun and Saturn, in that order, for this chart moment.

The Lagna and the Moon give four lords, and the day a fifth

Krishnamurti's horary reader sets out the method: Note the star and sign rising in the east at that place and moment, the star and sign the Moon occupies, and the day, counted from sunrise to sunrise. Their lords are the ruling planets, and a planet that appears twice is a stronger ruler.

The diagram uses the moment prepared for Mạghā's chart: noon on Saturday, 12 September 2026, in Bengaluru. Jyeṣṭhā rises at 18° Scorpio, so Mercury rules the Lagna's star and Mars its sign. The Moon is at 9° Virgo in Uttara Phalgunī, giving the Sun for the star and Mercury for the sign. Saturday belongs to Saturn. Mạghā accepts all four planets, in the order Mercury, Mars, Sun, Saturn.

Krishnamurti trusts the significators that are also rulers

In his worked examples, Krishnamurti lists the significators of the houses a question concerns, then keeps the planets that are also ruling planets. The event is expected in the joint periods of those planets (their daśā, bhukti and antara), and a transit fixes the day.

Before matching, he screens the set. A ruler placed in the star or sub of a retrograde planet is rejected: it may seem to promise, but the matter falls through. A ruler that is itself retrograde stays, though it gives its results only after it turns direct. When a birth time is in doubt, he takes the rulers at the moment of judgment and looks for the rising sign, star and sub they govern.

Mạghā calculates the rulers for any moment and place

Ruling Planets uses the selected judgment time/place, Krishnamurti ayanāṁśa, Placidus and a sunrise-based weekday. It lists Lagna star/sign, Moon star/sign and day lord in that order, with significations. Rulers in retrograde planets' stars or subs are separated; node star lords show their agents.

Krishnamurti also includes nodes occupying a ruler's sign or conjoined with/aspected by a ruler. Mạghā omits this addition, so check the nodes separately.

Questions about KP ruling planets

Why do ruling planets keep changing?

Each lord moves at its own pace. The rising degree turns about one degree every four minutes, so the Lagna's star lord can change within the hour and its sign lord every two hours or so. The Moon changes star about once a day and sign a little over every two days, and the day lord changes at sunrise.

Do ruling planets include Rāhu and Ketu?

In Krishnamurti's method they can, in two ways: as the star lord of the Lagna or the Moon, and as an agent when a node occupies a ruler's sign or is conjoined with or aspected by a ruler; he treats such a node as stronger than the planet it stands for. Mạghā lists a node only in the first case, with the planets it represents shown as its agents.

Are the Lagna and Moon sub lords ruling planets?

Not in Krishnamurti's horary reader, which names five lords: the day lord and the star and sign lords of the Lagna and the Moon. Some later KP astrologers add the sub lords of the Lagna and the Moon to make seven. Mạghā calculates the original five.
